i just discovered your blog 1hour ago. i just finished downloading every single cassete from mali and, despite the few background info displayed on the artists, it is still a great treasure you have here. congratulations!!
I hadn't read this before. I'm interested in the comments on Rawlings. I suppose he wasn't perfect, but he did seem to be a BIG, BIG improvement on the previous administrations. He got the economy back on its feet, restored a measure of stability, gave Ghanaians back their self-respect, and gave up power VOLUNTARILY. Nigerians I know who've been to Ghana rave about how much better it is now than their own country.
rawlings did leave voluntarily, which should not be underestimated, true. but he is also allegedly behind extrajudicial killings and severe graft that remains in the memories of those affected. some of his policies, like the school funding related one i mention in the article, still ripple haphazardly through ghana today. that's all i was saying. i am not a rawlings-hater, though i know plenty of them.
yeah... just to echo John B.'s comment, a lot of people in Nigeria pray for a Rawlings-type figure. probably a bit of romanticization going on there, of course...
