Bonga!Yes! This man played in my Dad's wedding and is the music he grew up listening to...Bonga CDs were some of the only ones that my Dad would play in his car. And there is a lot more from where this came from...Bonga is a prolific singer, a larger than life figure in my Angola.

Nice! Thanks for this Bonga Kandandu information. My parents love his music.

Do you suppose the Grateful Dead heard some of this stuff back in the day? Many parallels in the rhythms and guitar noodlings.

Terrific music, as always.

Cheers and blessings,

i don't know if the dead got to hear music like this, king possum, but i will take any excuse to ponder anything grateful dead-related...so thanks for the note, good question!

damn, wish i'd seen you were playing sf. maybe next time?

Dear ATFA, I'm sorry but this has nothing to do with fado nor is it in Portuguese. The last song actually is in Portuguese, but it's so far-out that I'm not even sure it's Bonga. (singing in a weird pitch and with Brazilian accent...)

For the ultimate Bonga goodness please try to find "Angola 72", his debut album.

You might enjoy a compilation released by Buda Musique called "Angola 70's: 1974-1978", there are some supreme gems in it. (there's another one, 1972 to 1974 or something which is also awesome, although not on tape...)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the amazing music, your blog rules.

(I didn't realize people were asking 50$ for it on Amazon... Embarrassing.)

ah word, thanks for the correction, P Al, i obviously don't know much about this stuff here. and i am surprised people are asking so much money for it on amazon, it's not even that good to my ears.
